End of Tenancy

A Seven-Day Move-Out Cleaning Timeline

Organise packing, appliance preparation, cleaning and final evidence with a practical seven-day countdown to your tenancy checkout.

An empty rental home ready for final move-out cleaning

Trying to pack and deep-clean an entire property on checkout day creates avoidable pressure. A seven-day plan separates preparation from the final clean and leaves time to correct anything missed.

Adapt this timeline to your tenancy agreement, inventory appointment and removal date.

Seven days before checkout

Confirm the essentials:

  • Exact date and time possession must be returned
  • Key and fob handover arrangements
  • Inventory checkout time
  • Removal-company access
  • Cleaner or specialist bookings
  • Parking or building restrictions
  • Appliance and utility instructions

Review the check-in inventory and photographs. Make a room-by-room list of cleaning, maintenance and possible damage. Report repair issues rather than leaving them for the final inspection.

If booking a professional clean, send accurate property details and photographs now. Confirm whether oven, carpets and internal windows are included.

Six days before

Reduce the contents:

  • Donate, sell or remove unwanted belongings
  • Dispose of ordinary waste correctly
  • Clear cupboards that are no longer needed
  • Remove loft, shed, garage or balcony items
  • Gather instruction manuals and keys
  • Separate items needed for the final week

Cleaning around packed boxes is inefficient. Aim to make each completed room progressively emptier.

Do not abandon furniture or large waste without permission. Arrange suitable collection in advance.

Five days before

Tackle low-use rooms:

  • Empty and wipe storage
  • Dust high-to-low
  • Clean wardrobes and shelving
  • Wipe doors, frames and skirting boards
  • Clean accessible internal glass
  • Vacuum edges and floors

Keep one room available for packed boxes so cleared rooms remain clean.

Four days before

Begin kitchen preparation:

  • Use or remove perishable food
  • Check defrosting instructions
  • Clean cupboards as they become empty
  • Degrease cupboard fronts and splashbacks
  • Clean small appliances
  • Check oven-cleaning arrangements
  • Remove recycling and excess packaging

Avoid disconnecting or moving fixed appliances unless authorised and safe.

Three days before

Clean bathrooms in detail while keeping one minimal set of toiletries available:

  • Descale suitable taps and fittings
  • Clean tiles, screens and sanitary ware
  • Wipe cupboards and shelving
  • Clean extractor covers where accessible
  • Wash bins
  • Detail floor edges

Use ventilation and follow product labels. Never mix chemicals.

Two days before

Complete the move and prepare for final services:

  • Remove almost all belongings
  • Check every cupboard, drawer and storage space
  • Collect all keys and fobs
  • Defrost and dry appliances where required
  • Ensure electricity and water remain available for cleaning
  • Give the cleaner safe access instructions

If carpets will be extraction-cleaned, schedule enough drying time before the final inspection.

One day before

Carry out the full clean or allow the professional team to work through the agreed checklist. Clean from high surfaces down and floors last.

Use our end-of-tenancy cleaning checklist for a detailed room-by-room review.

After the clean:

  • Inspect in good lighting
  • Check appliance interiors
  • Look inside all cupboards
  • Review bathrooms for hair or residue
  • Check floor edges and behind doors
  • Remove cleaning products and rubbish
  • Allow wet areas to dry

Checkout day

Complete a calm final walk-through:

  1. Photograph every room.
  2. Record close-ups of appliances, sanitary fittings and floors.
  3. Note meter readings where required.
  4. Confirm windows and doors are secure.
  5. Remove final rubbish.
  6. Return all keys and obtain confirmation.
  7. Keep invoices and communications.

Photographs should show the overall room and important details. Do not rely on a few wide shots.

If you have less than seven days

Prioritise:

  • Removing all possessions and waste
  • Kitchen grease and appliance interiors
  • Bathroom limescale, residue and hair
  • Floors and visible surfaces
  • Final evidence

Be realistic about what you can complete yourself. It may be better to book a defined professional scope than attempt every optional task and miss essential areas.
