The kitchen often needs more planning than any other room at the end of a tenancy. Cupboards must be emptied, appliances may need preparation and grease can be hidden around handles and edges that everyday wiping misses.

Start early enough to identify the work and arrange help if needed. For a Derby rental, a clear kitchen checklist can support a smoother handover, but it should sit alongside the agreed cleaning scope and property condition record.

Clear the room before cleaning

Remove food, personal belongings and unwanted packaging. Decide what belongs to the property and what must leave, using the inventory where one is available.

Empty cupboards that are included in the clean so their interiors can be reached. Take care when moving fragile items, and do not shift heavy appliances without a suitable plan.

Check that water and electricity will remain available for the agreed work. Tell the cleaning company about any broken appliance or leak before the visit, rather than leaving the team to discover it during cleaning.

Work through cupboards and surfaces

Remove loose crumbs and debris, then clean using methods suitable for the finish. Pay attention to handles, edges and areas around the hob where residue may collect.

Avoid soaking vulnerable joins or using abrasive tools on finishes that can scratch. Follow product and surface instructions, including any test in an inconspicuous area where appropriate.

Area Inspection point
Cupboards Shelves, corners, doors and handles
Worktops Residue around appliances and edges
Splashback Grease and visible marks
Sink Basin, taps and surrounding fittings
Floor Accessible edges and beneath movable items

Leave cleaned interiors dry before closing doors or replacing agreed property items. A visual check from a second angle can help reveal streaks that were missed in the first pass.

Plan appliance interiors individually

Confirm whether the oven, fridge, microwave and other interiors are included. Different appliances require different preparation and cleaning methods.

Remove fridge contents and discuss freezer defrosting in advance. Follow manufacturer instructions; do not use sharp tools to remove ice or improvise with heat.

Allow appliances to cool before suitable cleaning. Do not mix cleaning products, and follow label instructions for ventilation, protective equipment and rinsing. Keep electrical controls and components protected as specified by the manufacturer.

Leave floors until the higher work is finished

Once cupboards, worktops and appliances are complete, remove debris from the floor and clean it using a suitable method. Avoid spreading residue from one area to another.

Allow the floor to dry safely before the final inspection. Check that no equipment, cloths or packaging remain in the room and that appliances are left in the agreed state.

If there is damage, a persistent odour or signs of an underlying moisture problem, record it and arrange appropriate assessment. Additional product application may not address the cause.

Inspect against the agreed scope

Look at the kitchen as a whole and then revisit the easily missed details: handles, cupboard corners, the sink surround and accessible floor edges. Record any work that could not be completed and why.

Cleaning and property damage are separate matters. Avoid promising that a particular clean will determine a tenancy deposit decision.
